What Is CBS Construction?

Concrete block and stucco (CBS) is the dominant construction method in Florida residential building. Exterior walls are concrete masonry units finished with stucco. This construction is durable, termite-resistant, and well-suited to Florida's hurricane environment — but has specific maintenance characteristics.

Stucco Maintenance

Stucco develops cracks over time from thermal movement and settling. Small cracks are cosmetic and primarily a water intrusion risk. They should be sealed and repainted periodically. Stucco in Florida requires repainting every 5–7 years due to UV degradation and mold growth.

Anchoring Into CBS Walls

You cannot anchor into a CBS wall the way you would into wood-frame drywall. There are no wood studs. Everything that needs to be anchored requires masonry anchors and a hammer drill. A handyman experienced with Florida construction knows this.

Moisture Management in CBS

CBS walls can absorb moisture through failed stucco, window seals, or roof penetrations. Annual inspection of all exterior seals and stucco condition is important.
