High-Impact, Low-Cost Improvements
Ceiling fans — A ceiling fan running counterclockwise in summer allows the thermostat to be set 4–8 degrees higher with the same comfort level.
Weatherstripping on exterior doors — Gaps in door weatherstripping allow conditioned air to escape. Replacing worn weatherstripping is simple and inexpensive.
Caulking around windows — Air infiltration through failed window caulking adds to cooling load. Re-caulking is a one-time repair that pays back over time.
HVAC filter maintenance — A dirty filter forces the system to work harder. Replace filters monthly during peak cooling season.
